In this guide, we explain every possible Clean Truck Check OBD test result — and exactly what you need to do for each one.

✅ Passed

What it means: Your vehicle successfully passed the Clean Truck Check OBD test. Your truck is fully CARB compliant — no action required.

What to do: Nothing! Your truck is road-ready and compliant with California Air Resources Board requirements. Your result will be automatically reported to the CARB CTC-VIS system.

❌ Failed

What it means: The test completed successfully, but your vehicle did not pass the OBD emissions check. Your truck may have fault codes related to emissions or vehicle systems.

Common fault codes that cause failure:

• U0121 — Lost Communication With ABS Control Module
• U0415 — Invalid Data Received From ABS Control Module
• P205B — Reductant Tank Temperature Sensor Range/Performance
• P20C1 — Reductant Heater Control Circuit/Open

What to do:

1. Take your truck to a mechanic to diagnose and repair the fault codes
2. Once repairs are done, bring your truck to our location

⏳ Not Ready

What it means: The test completed, but your truck’s OBD system has not finished enough internal checks yet. The platform will automatically attempt the test again — no action required on your side.

This commonly happens when:

• Vehicle trouble codes were recently cleared
• The battery was disconnected
• The vehicle has not been driven enough since repairs or maintenance

What to do:

• Drive your truck more — highway miles help complete readiness monitors
• Allow more warm-up cycles
• Give the engine more run time

The system will automatically retest once readiness conditions are met.

🚫 Vehicle N/A

What it means: Your vehicle is not eligible for Clean Truck Check OBD testing.

OBD testing applies only to:

• Diesel vehicles with 2013 or newer engines
• Alternative fuel vehicles with 2018 or newer engines

What to do: If your truck has a pre-2013 diesel engine, you need an Opacity Test (OVI test) instead of an OBD test. We perform both types of tests.

⚠️ Test Invalid

What it means: The test could not be accepted because the required testing conditions were not met during the test.

Common reasons:

• Engine was turned off during the test
• Vehicle began moving while the test was in progress
• Vehicle was not parked correctly during testing

What to do: Before running the test again, make sure:

• ✅ Engine is running
• ✅ Vehicle is parked and not moving
• ✅ Test runs to completion without interruption

💻 SW Invalid

What it means: The software used to collect and submit the vehicle’s OBD data is not valid for this test. This usually happens while system components are being updated.

What to do: Simply schedule a manual retest. This issue resolves itself once the system update is complete.

🔍 Referee Referral

What it means: The test completed, but your vehicle’s OBD system may not match the manufacturer’s certified configuration. Your truck may have emissions-related components or engine configurations that do not match the original manufacturer-certified setup.

What to do:

1. Complete any needed repairs
2. Request a Clean Truck Check Referee Inspection through your CTC-VIS account:
   
   • Go to Main Menu
   • Select Forms
   • Open the Online Forms tab
   • Submit the Referee Appointment Request form

❓ Indeterminate

What it means: The test completed, but the CARB system could not determine a clear result. This is usually a device connection issue.

Common cause: Connecting the device to an RP1226 telematics connector instead of a proper OBD connector causes this result.

What to do: Before running the test again, check:

• ✅ Device is connected correctly to the OBD port
• ✅ No other devices are plugged into the vehicle’s OBD port
• ✅ Correct OBD connector is being used (not RP1226 telematics connector)
